Consumer Protection Division & Resources

The Consumer Protection and Antitrust Division protects North Dakota consumers from misleading, deceptive, or unlawful trade practices in connection with the sale or advertisement of goods or services by enforcing the state’s antitrust laws and consumer fraud laws including, among others, false advertising, do-not-call, contractor fraud, transient merchant, home solicitation sales, and charitable solicitation laws.

The division maintains and facilitates a consumer complaint mediation program in which it mediates complaints between consumers and businesses with voluntary participation by the businesses. The division maintains a database of the filing and resolutions of filed complaints and consumers may obtain this complaint history and related information.

In addition, the division initiates investigations and pursue legal actions for violation of laws enforced by the division, including on a statewide, regional, or national basis, and coordinates and participates in joint investigations and legal actions with local, state, and federal regulatory and law enforcement agencies.
